Lammas itself dates back to ancient pagan harvest festivals, marking the beginning of the harvest season. Traditionally, newly baked loaves were brought into churches to be blessed, symbolising gratitude and hope for the months ahead. Over time, the Scottish celebration evolved into a local holiday—an opportunity for communities to gather, trade goods, and celebrate the hard work behind the harvest.
Historically, the weeks leading up to Lammas were often the most challenging of the year, as food supplies from the previous harvest began to run low. The arrival of Lammas signalled a turning point, bringing renewed optimism and the promise of more plentiful times ahead.
By the end of the 20th century, only a handful of Lammas fairs remained, with St Andrews proudly continuing this historic tradition today—offering a unique blend of heritage and fun that draws visitors back year after year.
