The St Andrews Lammas Market

One of Scotland’s oldest and most treasured traditions is set to return once again—the St Andrews Lammas Market is back for 2026!

While official dates have yet to be confirmed, the Lammas Market traditionally takes place from Friday through to Tuesday in early August. Based on previous years, it is expected to run in early August transforming Market Street and South Street into a vibrant hub of funfair rides, stalls, and irresistible food and drink.

For five days, the town comes alive with colour, energy, and a real sense of community. It’s one of the highlights of the St Andrews calendar and a fantastic time to visit.

All of our St Andrews properties are within easy walking distance, making it effortless to wander into town, soak up the atmosphere, and enjoy everything the market has to offer—whether for a single afternoon or a full long weekend.

Lammas itself dates back to ancient pagan harvest festivals, marking the beginning of the harvest season. Traditionally, newly baked loaves were brought into churches to be blessed, symbolising gratitude and hope for the months ahead. Over time, the Scottish celebration evolved into a local holiday—an opportunity for communities to gather, trade goods, and celebrate the hard work behind the harvest.

Historically, the weeks leading up to Lammas were often the most challenging of the year, as food supplies from the previous harvest began to run low. The arrival of Lammas signalled a turning point, bringing renewed optimism and the promise of more plentiful times ahead.

By the end of the 20th century, only a handful of Lammas fairs remained, with St Andrews proudly continuing this historic tradition today—offering a unique blend of heritage and fun that draws visitors back year after year.
