Fun golf for all the family

St Andrews is one of the most famous golfing destinations in the world, but it’s also a fantastic place to enjoy family golf. From historic putting greens to relaxed practice facilities, there are plenty of ways for children and teenagers to experience golf in St Andrews in a fun and accessible way.

Family Golf at the Himalayas Putting Green

Right in the heart of town, nestled between the famous Old Course and West Sands Beach, you’ll find The Himalayas Putting Green — a bucket‑list experience for families. Originally founded in 1867 by the St Andrews Ladies’ Putting Club, this course has become a favourite for visitors of all ages.

There are two options to play: a nine‑hole layout that’s perfect for younger players, and an 18‑hole course that offers a bit more challenge for adults and teens alike. The layout changes regularly, keeping the game fresh each time you visit. Equipment is included in the green fee.

The setting is relaxed, and because it’s just a walk from the town centre, you can easily fit a session in between other plans or after exploring the beaches.

Crazy Golf at Craigtoun Park

If you’re looking for a slightly longer day out, Craigtoun Country Park — just outside St Andrews — is home to the only traditional crazy golf course in the area. Set within 47 acres of parkland, the facility offers plenty to do beyond golf, including boating on the lake, pedal cars, tractor rides, bouncy castles, and picnic spots.

Entry to the park and parking are free, and you can buy tickets at the office for activities like crazy golf and rides. There’s also an on‑site café serving hot and cold food, including children’s meals, and a selection of ice creams on warmer days — perfect for a casual family outing

Indoor Family Golf Experiences Near St Andrews

For days when the Scottish weather has other plans, indoor golf is a great option. The Centre of Golf Excellence in St Andrews offers golf simulators and family packages that make for a fun, weather‑proof experience.

Here, families can play virtual versions of famous courses, try games like “bullseye” and “closest to the pin,” or take part in simulator sessions together — a great way to introduce younger players to golf without needing a traditional course.

Putting and Practice Options

If you want a relaxed bit of practice during your stay, there are several smaller putting greens and driving range facilities nearby. Many visitors enjoy popping down to the St Andrews Links Golf Academy driving range to hit a few balls and soak up some of the town’s golfing atmosphere, and you can usually just turn up on the day.

Even if you’re not planning a full round of golf, it’s a fun way to be part of the local scene and spend some time as a family.

Staying Nearby

One of the best things about choosing self‑catered accommodation in St Andrews is how close many properties are to these golf‑related activities. Whether your aim is to try family putting, explore the greens at your own pace, or simply enjoy more relaxed games together, staying centrally makes it easy to organise your days.
